Our work offers a toolkit for sharing knowledge and engaging stakeholders around prevention, diversion, corrections, and reentry.

Developed as a tool to increase understanding of the relationship between the justice system and community-based support, the “Breaking Cycles” game invites players to make cooperative decisions and investments as their avatars move through Hawaiʻi’s justice system.
Sharing through storytelling–a graphic short story about a new justice pathway
“Ke Ala Hoʻoponopono I Waikahi tells the story of an individual going through a new justice pathway that includes rigorous evaluations, appropriate treatment, connections to services, dignified living, work opportunities, and warm hand-offs.
Hawaiʻi-based justice cards for showing and sharing
Based on the Decarceration Toolkit by Designing Justice + Designing Spaces, led by Deanna Van Buren, the UHCDC team created sorting cards rooted in our local culture and place. These cards supported engagement at the Halawa Correctional Facility to connect with currently incarcerated individuals.
Idea bubbles for brainstorming
The team created a set of outdoor amenity idea bubbles, allowing participants to identify the types of activities, resources, and spaces they want in a facility design.
