Maunawili Breeding Station
The Hawaiʻi Agriculture Research Center (HARC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity. Their mission is to support a viable agricultural sector by researching and applying relevant science and technology to achieve practical solutions and identify new agricultural opportunities.
In early 2025, HARC engaged UHCDC to assist in developing architectural documentation for a multi-purpose facility at their Maunawili Breeding Station, an 80-acre farm situated in Maunawili Valley, in Kailua, Oʻahu. The facility is supported by an aging septic system and will be replaced with a new septic system and bioreactor garden which leverages natural processes of plants, soil, and microbial activity to clean water coming from septic systems. In order to project the size and scale of the system needed, HARC needs to update projected wastewater flows for the system.
UHCDC conducted site documentation, measurements, and building modeling to produce an accurate floor plan of the existing structure, including room areas and plumbing fixture counts. This information was used to estimate current and projected wastewater flows associated with the facility’s use. The resulting documentation supports HARC’s planning and coordination with engineering consultants for the design of the replacement septic system and bioreactor garden.
