An Outdoor Student Terrace

The College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa collaborated with the UHCDC to create a concept design for an outdoor student lounge and experimental garden. The goal of the project was to explore the potential for an outdoor lounge immediately outside of the Gilmore student lounge, an existing space which provides an area to study, print, read, access books, heat up food, eat, and cultivate hydroponically grown produce.

The UHCDC team conducted a series of engagement workshops with CTAHR student representatives and Student Services staff to identify the students’ educational and social priorities and potential programming opportunities.

Using the feedback solicited from the CTAHR community, the design team then created a concept design for a cohesive outdoor lounge that consists of experimental gardens where students can foster a sense of community and stewardship and a terrace and multi-tiered bench where students can hold group meetings or outdoor classes. Proposed programs included volunteer days for the student groups and broader community as well as outdoor move nights.
