Over 120 talk stories, 18 site visits and listening workshops, 3 symposiums, 6 co-design workshops, 4 pop-up exhibits, and 5 community of practice meetings informed this work.

Engagement board game and role play

Developed as a tool to increase understanding of the relationship between the justice system and community-based support, the “Breaking Cycles” game invites players to make cooperative decisions and investments as their avatars move through Hawaiʻi’s justice system. Check out the game online!

Based on the Decarceration Toolkit by Designing Justice + Designing Spaces led by Deanna Van Buren, the team created cards rooted in our local culture and place.

Design Elements

The team created a set of outdoor amenity and program cards as a design toolkit, allowing participants to identify the types of activities, resources, and supportive spaces they find meaningful and important to include in facility design.
