Pacific Seaweed Resilience Institute

UHCDC is working with the Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity (DAB) to explore the development of a Pacific Seaweed Resilience Institute (PSRI) as a driver of the blue economy, defined as the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, livelihoods, and ecosystem health. Restoring Hawaiʻi’s nearshore ecosystems through indigenous seaweed aquaculture practices offers multifaceted ecological, economic, and cultural benefits. This study will explore different models for a PSRI that serves as a regional hub for tropical seaweed research, conservation, and sustainable cultivation.
